Driving in Uganda — know before you go
Essential reading for self drive car rental in Uganda — especially outside Kampala.
Unmarked speed humps
Residents on murram access roads within Kampala and nearby towns often build their own speed humps — unmarked, non-standard, and sometimes clustered several within a short stretch. Slow right down on any murram road, especially at night when they're near-invisible.
Potholes on the highway
Even on main highways, deep potholes can form and go unrepaired for months. Scan the road ahead, especially after rain when water hides the depth. Slow down early — you can't always swerve safely.
Watch the service mileage sticker
Most cars carry a sticker on the windscreen showing the next oil change mileage. Do not exceed it — returning a car past its service interval may attract charges, and driving with depleted oil causes serious engine damage.
Night driving
Street lighting is limited outside the city centre. Pedestrians, cyclists, and boda bodas share the road at night often without reflectors or lights. Reduce speed after dark, use full beam on unlit roads, and give yourself extra stopping distance.
